World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities, 5-6 June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The objectives of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) are: to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development; to assess progress towards internationally agreed goals on sustainable development; and to address new and emerging challenges. The summit will also focus on two themes: a green economy in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development, and an institutional framework for sustainable development

National Symposium: Enhancing Dissertations and Final Year Projects – Experiences, Embedding and the Future, 29 February 2012, University of Gloucestershire

This one day symposium will explore how the dissertation experience can be enhanced. It will explore case studies which demonstrate how dissertations or creative honours projects can take many forms which are innovative or creative in the context of their discipline or institution, and may include group, work-oriented and community-based projects. The HEA’s Chief Executive Craig Mahoney will be giving a keynote speech, as well as Stephen Marston (Vice Chancellor, University of Gloucestershire) and Vicky Gunn (University of Glasgow). This event is sponsored by a National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) funded project being undertaken by the University of Gloucestershire entitled: ‘Rethinking Final Year Projects and Dissertations: Creative Honours and Capstone Projects’.

Using Smartphone technology with foundation doctors: lessons learned (part of the Health Sciences Workshop & Seminar Series 2012), 5 July 2012, Cardiff University

The seminar will report lessons learned from the “iDoc” project. This initiative, supported by the Wales Deanery, provided trainee doctor participants across Wales with a Smartphone, micro SD-card and software containing 17 medical textbooks.

HEA Annual Conference, 3-4 July 2012, University of Manchester

The title for the 8th Annual Conference of the HEA is “Great Expectations – are you ready?” Higher education is undergoing transformational change throughout the UK and although policies may be diverging amongst the four nations, the principle of students being central is shared. Their expectations of their course, institution and learning experience are rising. Staff and Institutions have their own aims and expectations too. In the year of the London Olympics where competitors have expectations of winning and are preparing to be ready for the challenge we apply the theme to the higher education sector and explore its implications for 2012. There are three main strands: Student expectations and the learning experience; Supporting staff to deliver student learning experiences of a lifetime; Institutional adaptability.

Believe and achieve: supporting achievement through the co-curriculum, 27 June 2012, University of Wales, Newport

This event is being hosted as part of the Higher Education Academy's Workshop and Seminar Series 2012. The aims of the seminar: to identify key development themes in supporting the co-curricular student experience to enhance retention and success; to stimulate discussion on case study examples and developments(from Newport and from attending institutions); and to provide opportunities for those involved in enhancing the co-curricular student experience to link together to discuss potential collaborative opportunities. This event aims to bring together teachers of Islamic Studies from a wide range of disciplines (e.g. Theology and Religious Studies, History, Politics, Literature, Sociology, Anthropology, Law, Business and Finance), and is open to both specialists and non-specialists who teach on modules related to Islam.

Workplace based learning in action: Developing the UK research network, 9 May 2012, Cardiff University

This seminar will focus on bringing together UK researchers investigating triadic interactional activities between students, doctors and patients within workplace based learning activities (e.g. bedside teaching encounters: BTEs). Although patient-doctor interaction has been heavily researched and is of major importance in the development of communication skills, the triadic student-patient-doctor relationship within workplace learning encounters has so far received little attention.

What works? Student retention and success conference 2012, 28-29 March 2012, University of York

This two day residential conference is the final conference of the three year ‘What works? Student retention and success programme’. The conference will provide key note addresses from leading experts in the field of student retention and success, findings from the ‘What works? programme’ as a whole, evidence relating to specific student groups and interventions, practical tools developed by the project teams, and sessions about retention research and interventions from across the UK and beyond.

Future Directions: Foundation Degrees – where policy meets practice, 29 February 2012, University of Glamorgan

This event has been set up by a number of sector partners (Colegau Cymru, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, the Higher Education Academy, Higher Skills Wales, and the Quality Assurance Agency). The Wales Employment and Skills Board’s (WESB) new Chair, Deputy Minister for Skills, Jeff Cuthbert AM will provide the opening address. The event will focus on Wales’ journey in creating and developing Foundation Degrees, and considering where the journey should lead us. There will be interactive sessions focusing on employer and work-based learning routes into Foundation Degrees, institutional development of Foundation Degrees, and considering relevant policy areas.

A student centred approach to developing the content, delivery, and assessment of Research Process modules: Insights and evaluations of student retention, 22 February 2012, Cardiff Metropolitan University

The event will: share experiences of developing the content, delivery, and assessment of the modules through student feedback; share current practice within the Research Process modules at the CSS, with insight into the content, delivery, and assessment methods; give insight from current students and staff about their experiences; and offer attendees the opportunity to evaluate the structure of the modules, with focus on the strengths, limitations, ways to improve, and how such a structure could be integrated within their department / institutions.

Appreciative Inquiry: Translating the Theory into Practice (part of the Health Sciences Workshop & Seminar Series 2012), 15 February 2012, Cardiff University

This workshop aims to investigate ways in which to introduce appreciative enquiry methods, through problem-based learning activities to promote individual learning and creativity. An example of a Level 6 module designed to explore and develop management and entrepreneurial skills of final level occupational therapy students will be used to demonstrate innovation in learning and teaching using appreciative enquiry.

This is the first STEM Learning and Teaching Summit. This event has been designed to inform and influence institutional strategy and policy on Feedback within STEM subjects. Delegates have been specifically invited to this event due their expertise and we have chosen them to work with the HEA to develop its learning and teaching policy and position statements in relation to Feedback in STEM subjects. HEA UK travel fund

The HEA has launched a UK travel fund that will help staff and students in UK higher education to exchange and disseminate good practice in learning, teaching and assessment and engage with their peers. The funding may be used to help the applicant(s) attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups that are being run in the UK.

New HEA Doctoral Programme announced

The HEA is inviting bids from UK higher education institutions to host one or more doctoral studentships for the academic year 2011/12. The HEA Doctoral Programme forms part of the HEA’s strategy to undertake research to develop pedagogical knowledge and evidence-based practice in HE. This academic year, seven doctoral studentships are available. The deadline for receipt of applications is 10 February 2012.

HEA opens calls for new change programmes

Calls are now open for the HEA’s discipline-focused change programmes in Arts and Humanities, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The closing date for proposals is 13 February 2012.

Teaching Development Grants – Individual Grant Scheme – call now open

This academic year, the HEA is making a total of £1.5million of funding available for individual grants, departmental grants and collaborative grants. The second round of Individual Grant funding is now open. In this phase there is a maximum of £7,000 available for each project. Call closes 19 February 2012.

International Scholarship Scheme

The HEA’s international scholarship scheme has been designed to benefit the UK Higher Education (HE) sector by bringing back interesting, challenging and innovative learning and teaching practice to the UK. This new is aimed at supporting individuals in the sector to undertake specific investigations outside of the UK and deliver specific outcomes for dissemination within the UK sector at the end of the scholarship through various means, as appropriate to enhance the UK student learning experience. The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 2012.

HEA / UKCISA call for funding - Connections: Pilot projects supporting Internationalisation

The HEA, in conjunction with the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) invite proposals for funded projects around internationalisation to support both international students studying in the UK and to encourage UK students to take opportunities to be more internationally aware. Applications are expected to be for up to £10,000 per project, although higher amounts may be available in exceptional circumstances. The closing date for applications is 30 January 2012.

CELT & Newport Graduate School Event:

Curriculum Design: Outcomes and Assessment Briefs
Date: 31st January 2012
Time: 11am
Venue: Caerleon Campus in the Graduate School (top floor of the Learning Centre)

This interactive session will explore approaches to articulating curriculum outcomes, assessment briefs, and feedback to students.

Material covering the purposes of curriculum design and appropriate language and terminology will be followed by a practical session introducing the JISC-funded CogenT toolkit (http://insight.glos.ac.uk/tli/activities/cogent/).

Although the session is scheduled for one hour, participants are welcome to stay on for a second hour to use the CogenT toolkit and generate outcomes.

The session will be led by:
Professor Stephen Hill (Dean of Teaching and Learning Innovation, University of Gloucestershire, and Visiting Professor , University of Newport) and
Dr Phil Gravestock (Head of Academic Practice, University of Gloucestershire and external examiner for the PG Certificate in Developing Professional Practice in HE at the University of Newport)

If you have a laptop or iPad, please bring them along.  If you do not have these facilities machines will be available.

Higher Education Academy Conference Call

The call for sessions and posters for the 8th Annual Conference of the Higher Education Academy called “Great Expectations – are you ready?” will close at 12.00 noon on 13th January 2012.  There are three main strands: Student expectations and the learning experience; Supporting staff to deliver student learning experiences of a lifetime; Institutional adaptability.  Session submitters will be informed of the outcome of the session submission process in mid February 2012.
